The man with his tape loops,
One of the gifts my girlfriend got me for my birthday this year was a ticket for William Basinski’s show at Roter Salon/ Volksbühne in Berlin. We are not these kind of people who see a lot of shows, because there is just too much going on. So of course this show was special, not only because we try to only pick the good and interesting ones.
And yes, Mr. Basinski is one of the most interesting ones and he is definitely one of a kind. His master piece “Disintegration Loops” and the video he shot on 9/11 is a very contemporary art piece. These loops are based on the sound of a tape that old that it is basically falling apart and it captures something I never heard or experienced before. The fact that this only happened by a coinsidence makes it even more interesting to me.
It was a wonderful show at Roter Salon and as far as I know it was sold out. I think it is just the time for this kind of music and everyone is searching for their own “chill pill“. William Basinski was very relaxed and after he said a few things, he just dived into his ambient loops. It was a great experience to finally hear it live.
Evening report:
His equipment were 2 Uher Report, one mixer, a computer an an echo machine.

It was only a 50 min show but actually after a long day of work, it was perfect. Although his music just seems to be a monotone repetition, it is all full of sound and information. Just watch the little clip below.
